For more than three decades, the Information Center Benchmarking (IZB) at the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology IPK has established itself as a recognized benchmarking institution in Europe. Since 1994, we have continuously advanced benchmarking knowledge, methodologies, and practical applications through international research and consulting projects. We combine the technical and business expertise of Fraunhofer IPK with an international network of companies, research institutions, and subject-matter experts, including the Global Benchmarking Network. On this basis, we support organizations in systematically assessing their performance, learning from leading approaches, and identifying concrete opportunities for improvement.
Our service portfolio comprises process, product, and performance benchmarking, as well as benchmarking-based support for digital and sustainable transformation. In the field of digital transformation, we assess how far companies have progressed in areas such as strategy, leadership, organization, capabilities, technologies, digital products and services, and the integration of their value chains. The results are compared with suitable peer groups, making strengths, maturity gaps, and priority areas for action visible.
To support sustainable transformation, we assess how well companies are prepared—strategically, organizationally, and operationally—for the transition towards a circular economy. This includes, for example, the management of resources, materials, and products, the development of circular business models, collaboration across the value chain, and the integration of corresponding objectives and responsibilities within the organization.
We also support companies in evaluating their sustainability performance using suitable indicators and benchmarks. Relevant areas may include energy and resource efficiency, emissions, waste and material flows, social aspects, sustainable supply chains, and the implementation of strategic sustainability objectives. Comparisons with other organizations or sites help identify performance gaps, proven practices, and concrete opportunities for improvement.
